The Human Senses

We’re more than the 5 senses we’ve been taught. Researchers now count between 20-33 human senses.

Sensory Experience Compilation

Body awareness & internal senses

  1. Proprioception – sense of where your body parts are in space
  2. Kinesthesia – sense of body movement
  3. Equilibrioception – balance (inner ear)
  4. Vestibular sense – head position/acceleration (often grouped with balance)
  5. Nociception – pain
  6. Thermoception – temperature
  7. Interoception – internal bodily states (heartbeat, hunger, etc.)
  8. Chemoreception – detecting internal chemical changes (e.g., blood CO₂ levels)
  9. Baroception – sensing internal pressure changes
  10. Hunger (Gastroception)
  11. Thirst
  12. Pulmonary stretch – lung inflation sense
  13. Bladder/bowel distension sense
  14. Magnetoception – (debated in humans, well-documented in animals)

Touch subdivisions (touch isn’t really “one” sense)

  1. Mechanoreception – pressure/vibration
  2. Pruriception – itch
  3. Tactile pressure
  4. Vibration sense
  5. Hair movement/follicle sense

Time & spatial senses

  1. Chronoception – sense of time passing
  2. Sense of direction/spatial orientation

Taste subdivisions

  1. Sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami – often split into 5 separate receptor-based “senses” rather than one
  2. Fat taste (oleogustus) – proposed as a 6th taste

Smell-related

  1. Pheromone detection (vomeronasal, debated in humans)

Other proposed/debated senses

  1. Sense of muscle tension
  2. Joint position sense
  3. Sense of effort
  4. Sense of satiety
  5. Thermal pain vs. thermal warmth (sometimes split as separate systems)
  6. Sense of nausea
  7. Sense of numbness/paresthesia pathways
  8. Sense of skin stretch
  9. Sense of “wetness” (actually a combination of thermoception + mechanoreception, since there’s no dedicated wetness receptor)
